That seemingly innocent bottle of face wash can actually contain some pretty scary chemicals. Everything from carcinogenic formaldehyde to endocrine-disrupting parabens and phthalates hiding under the “fragrance” label, most face washes at the drugstore are a toxic concoction of unnecessary chemicals that have no business being on our skin.
Our skin is our largest organ, and what we put on it matters. The chemicals in traditional face wash get absorbed directly into our bloodstream, where they can accumulate over time and potentially contribute to health issues down the line.

Toxic Ingredients To Avoid In Face Wash
Ethoxylated Ingredients
- Phenoxyethanol: Beyond 1,4-dioxane contamination, it’s known to cause skin irritation, negative neurological effects, and reproductive issues.
- Polysorbates: Including Polysorbate 20, 60, 80 and PEG compounds.
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate: Or anything ending in “-eth”.
Ethoxylated ingredients are often found in face wash products because it helps to get your skin squeaky clean.
However, these ingredients can be dangerous because they are created through a manufacturing process that can leave behind a troubling contaminant called 1,4-dioxane (a probable carcinogen).
Questionable Preservatives
- Formaldehyde & Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives: Look out for Quaternium-15 or DMDM hydantoin since these are known carcinogens.
