This guide to non-toxic summer camp essentials will help you pack with confidence—featuring safer sunscreens, clean snack gear, and natural sleep must-haves for kids.

Because a fun summer shouldn’t come at the cost of their health (or the planet).

Sleeping bag? Check. Flashlight? Check. Bug spray that won’t coat my kid in chemicals? Um…

If you’re a health-conscious parent like me, packing for summer camp feels like navigating a minefield of potential toxins.

Between the sunscreen that needs constant reapplication, the bug spray to ward off ticks, and the personal care products they’ll (hopefully) use, there’s a lot to consider beyond just packing enough underwear.

Text reading "non-toxic summer camp checklist", showcasing a variety of non-toxic summer camp products with checkboxes next to each item.

I’ve spent years testing safer alternatives for my own kids’ camp adventures, and I’ve learned that the transition to non-toxic camp supplies doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

The best part? Many of these safer alternatives are things you probably already have at home.

Non-Toxic Summer Camp Checklist: What Your Kids Really Need

In this guide, I’ll walk you through:

So let’s dive in and create a cleaner, greener camp experience for your child, one duffel bag at a time!

Best Organic Backpacks & Storage Solutions

When it comes to packing for camp, one of the most important pieces of gear your child will bring is their backpack.

I’ve learned the hard way that camp is not the place for that cute designer bag. Between muddy hikes, sudden downpours, and the general rough-and-tumble of camp life, backpacks take a serious beating.

It’s essential to choose one that can handle the adventure—and one that’s safe for your child too. You might be wondering, “How could a backpack possibly be non-toxic?” It’s a good question.

Many conventional backpacks are made with harmful chemicals, including PFAs (“forever chemicals”) in their water-resistant coatings and synthetic dyes.

These materials can pose unnecessary health risks, especially with the constant wear and tear of camp life.

That’s why I’ve rounded up some of my favorite non-toxic, organic backpack options that are tough enough for camp but free from harmful chemicals.

And while what your child carries during the day is important, organization inside the cabin or bunk matters just as much. Those tiny cabin cubbies fill up fast!

To help your child stay organized (and stress-free), I’m also sharing better, non-toxic storage solutions that are perfect for keeping their gear neat, accessible, and safe throughout their camp stay.

Best Non-Toxic Sleep Gear For Kids At Camp

After a full day of camp activities, good sleep becomes absolutely crucial. Most camps provide a basic mattress but expect campers to bring their own bedding.

When selecting non-toxic bedding for camp, I prioritize:

  • 100% Organic Cotton Sheets: They breathe better in hot cabins and don’t contain the formaldehyde often found in “wrinkle-free” bedding.
  • Natural Fiber Sleeping Bags: Cotton or wool-filled options for cabin use (synthetic bags are more practical for actual outdoor sleeping).
  • Wool/Cotton Mattress Covers: To create a barrier between your child and the camp mattress.
  • GOTS-Certified Cotton Pillowcases: Since faces press against these all night.
  • Natural Pillows: Latex, wool, or cotton options instead of polyurethane foam.

After a long day of camp activities, your child deserves a restful night’s sleep.

Pact’s Bedding is crafted from 100% organic cotton, ensuring it’s free from harmful chemicals and dyes.

Their Cool-Air Percale Sheet Set is particularly breathable and soft, making it perfect for warm summer nights at camp.

Not only will your child sleep comfortably, but you’ll also feel good knowing that Pact’s products are Fair Trade-certified and carbon-neutral.

The best thing is that their sheets get softer with every wash, ensuring long-lasting comfort throughout the camp season.

If you have younger ones off to their first year at sleep-away camp, sometimes it’s best to keep bedding simple.

And a good sleeping bag does just that.

Kiddos won’t have to worry about tucking in sheets or making their bed in the morning.

I love these kid-friendly Sleeping Bags from Wildkin.

They are soft, and cozy, and will keep your little one warm if it starts to get chilly in the cabin.

The best part is that Wildkin does their best to make their sleeping bags without toxic materials.

It’s mostly made from cotton, with some polyester and all of their sleeping bags are PVC-free, BPA-free, and phthalate-free.

Plus, it’s lightweight, so they won’t have trouble carrying it to the campfire or to their cabin.

Just keep in mind these sleeping bags are intended for indoor use only.

Consider investing in something more heavy-duty if they are going to be doing any overnight camping outdoors.

Best Non-Toxic Sunscreen & Bug Repellents For Camp Life

When it comes to protecting kids at camp, sunscreen and bug spray are two areas I absolutely refuse to compromise on.

Children’s skin is about 30% thinner than adult skin and absorbs chemicals more readily, allowing ingredients to penetrate more deeply—which is why conventional chemical sunscreens with ingredients like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and homosalate are so concerning.

These chemicals have been shown to absorb into the bloodstream and can disrupt hormones and trigger allergic reactions.

Non-toxic sunscreens work differently; instead of being absorbed, they sit on top of the skin and create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays.

They’re effective immediately (no need to wait 20 minutes before swimming!), less likely to irritate sensitive skin, and don’t contain hormone-disrupting chemicals.

At camp, where kids are sweating, swimming, and reapplying sunscreen multiple times a day, what’s in that bottle becomes even more important.

Bug protection is just as critical. Nothing can ruin a camp experience faster than being covered in itchy bug bites, but many conventional bug sprays contain DEET—a chemical that can be toxic when overused or improperly applied, which tends to happen often at camp.

While the EPA claims DEET is safe when used correctly, I’ve found that following those instructions perfectly is nearly impossible with kids.

They often apply too much and leave it on too long, making DEET potentially problematic. That’s why it’s so important to send your kids off with a good non-toxic bug spray or balm to keep them protected without exposing them to unnecessary risks.

For kids who resist putting on sunscreen, the Earth Mama Organics Baby Face Mineral Sunscreen Stick SPF 40 is a must-have.

This kid-friendly formula glides on smoothly and is infused with organic calendula and soothing organic aloe to keep your child’s skin moisturized and protected.

It’s perfect for applying to the face, arms, legs—basically, anywhere that’s exposed to the sun’s rays.

I love that it’s convenient to carry around and easy to apply, ensuring my child is always protected during our outdoor adventures.

Best Non-Toxic Water Bottles & Food Storage For Campers

While most camps handle the majority of meals, how food is stored, served, and supplemented is an important consideration for health-conscious parents.

One of the biggest concerns from a non-toxic perspective is the risk of food containers and water bottles leaching chemicals into what kids eat and drink, especially during the hot summer months when heat can cause these reactions to accelerate.

A good water bottle is perhaps the single most important item your child will bring to camp, as proper hydration becomes critical with increased outdoor activity and exposure to heat.

When choosing a non-toxic water bottle, it’s best to look for stainless steel options, which are durable and don’t leach chemicals even when left in the sun; glass bottles with a protective silicone sleeve, if the camp allows glass; or, if necessary, plastic bottles that are explicitly labeled “BPA-free” and “phthalate-free.”

Paying close attention to these choices helps ensure your child stays safely hydrated and also highlights the importance of selecting the best non-toxic food storage options to support their health and well-being during their camp adventures.

The ECOlunchbox Three-in-One is perfect for taking camp meals out into the wilderness.

This plastic-free bento set includes three stainless steel containers that nest together, keeping foods separate and fresh.

Best Non-Toxic Camp Clothing & Swimwear Essentials

When it comes to packing your kids for summer camp, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that camp is all about living more simply—you don’t need to pack all the comforts of home for them to have the best time.

In fact, the less they have to keep track of and organize, the better! This simplicity is liberating, but it doesn’t mean we have to compromise on health.

The clothing your child wears at camp will be in constant contact with their skin during intense activity and sweating, making fabric choices particularly important.

Choosing non-toxic camp clothing made from natural, breathable fibers helps reduce exposure to unwanted chemicals and keeps kids comfortable.

For camps with lots of water activities, quick-drying options are essential, and I’ve found that thin, natural fabrics like hemp/cotton blend dry much faster than thick cotton and perform better than synthetics in terms of comfort.

When it comes to rash guards and swim shirts, it’s important to look for options that offer UPF protection through tight weaving rather than chemical treatments.

Brands like Primary make great solid-color pieces that work well for team activities while still meeting my non-toxic standards.

For camp swim activities, Hanna Andersson offers Swimwear that combines safety and comfort.

Best Non-Toxic Camp-Ready Footwear

When I think about the beating my kids’ shoes take at camp, I’m amazed anything survives those intense weeks of puddle-jumping, creek-wading, sports-playing madness.

Many conventional shoes contain chemicals in their adhesives, waterproofing treatments, and synthetic materials that can be more readily absorbed by sweaty feet.

Here’s what I prioritize when choosing shoes for camp:

  • Natural rubber soles instead of PVC

  • Organic cotton, hemp, or naturally-tanned leather uppers

Practical Tips To Keep In Mind While Packing For Camp

Don’t pack their brand-new white Air Jordans—bring shoes you’re okay with getting banged up and muddy. Send items you’re ok with getting dirty, muddy, and potentially ruined.

This advice applies to clothing too. Send older items when possible, and save the new stuff for back-to-school shopping. Always be sure to pack extra socks and underwear since these tend to go missing most often.

Also don’t forget to label everything! Mabel’s Labels Tag Mates have been the most durable.

They stick directly to clothing tags and actually stay put through laundry cycles. For items without tags, their iron-on labels work well too.

Making the Transition Easier on Your Child

Sending your child to camp with all the perfect non-toxic gear is one thing, but preparing them to use it independently is another!

  • Test Products Before Camp: Start by testing everything before they leave. It helps them know what works for their skin, and they’ll be more likely to use familiar products. Have your child try out different sunscreens and bug sprays to see which ones they like best.
  • Build Independence: Encourage your child to manage their own health routines. Create a simple checklist for mornings and evenings, and practice it with them before camp. Visual reminders like pictures of sunscreen or a toothbrush can help younger kids.
  • Involve Them in Packing: Let them help pack their bag—it’s an exciting way to get them invested in the camp experience and ensure they know where everything is.
  • Talk About Feelings: Check in on how they’re feeling about camp. Acknowledge their excitement and nerves to help them feel more prepared emotionally!

This has been your non-toxic summer camp survival guide for 2026.

After years of trial and error, I’ve finally nailed down the must-have non-toxic essentials for a healthier camp experience.

Here’s what really matters:

  • Mineral sunscreen your child will actually use
  • A sturdy stainless steel water bottle
  • A good DEET-free bug spray that kids can apply safely on their own
  • An easy all-in-one shampoo and body wash
  • Sturdy organic cotton bedding
  • Natural fiber clothing that can hold up to outdoor adventures
  • A PFA-free backpack
  • Stainless steel or silicone food containers
  • And some good stick-on labels to make sure nothing gets left behind

You might already have a lot of these at home, and if not, don’t feel pressured to replace everything overnight—there are plenty of summers ahead to perfect your non-toxic packing list.

Most importantly, don’t let the quest for non-toxic perfection overshadow the growth camp brings.

Pack the safer alternatives, have those important “why it matters” talks, and then… let them go. It’s time for their camp adventure, and your peace of mind will follow!
