These chemicals have been shown to absorb into the bloodstream and can disrupt hormones and trigger allergic reactions.

Non-toxic sunscreens work differently; instead of being absorbed, they sit on top of the skin and create a physical barrier that reflects UV rays.

They’re effective immediately (no need to wait 20 minutes before swimming!), less likely to irritate sensitive skin, and don’t contain hormone-disrupting chemicals.

At camp, where kids are sweating, swimming, and reapplying sunscreen multiple times a day, what’s in that bottle becomes even more important.

Bug protection is just as critical. Nothing can ruin a camp experience faster than being covered in itchy bug bites, but many conventional bug sprays contain DEET—a chemical that can be toxic when overused or improperly applied, which tends to happen often at camp.

While the EPA claims DEET is safe when used correctly, I’ve found that following those instructions perfectly is nearly impossible with kids.

They often apply too much and leave it on too long, making DEET potentially problematic. That’s why it’s so important to send your kids off with a good non-toxic bug spray or balm to keep them protected without exposing them to unnecessary risks.

While most camps handle the majority of meals, how food is stored, served, and supplemented is an important consideration for health-conscious parents.

One of the biggest concerns from a non-toxic perspective is the risk of food containers and water bottles leaching chemicals into what kids eat and drink, especially during the hot summer months when heat can cause these reactions to accelerate.

A good water bottle is perhaps the single most important item your child will bring to camp, as proper hydration becomes critical with increased outdoor activity and exposure to heat.

When choosing a non-toxic water bottle, it’s best to look for stainless steel options, which are durable and don’t leach chemicals even when left in the sun; glass bottles with a protective silicone sleeve, if the camp allows glass; or, if necessary, plastic bottles that are explicitly labeled “BPA-free” and “phthalate-free.”

The clothing your child wears at camp will be in constant contact with their skin during intense activity and sweating, making fabric choices particularly important.

Choosing non-toxic camp clothing made from natural, breathable fibers helps reduce exposure to unwanted chemicals and keeps kids comfortable.

For camps with lots of water activities, quick-drying options are essential, and I’ve found that thin, natural fabrics like hemp/cotton blend dry much faster than thick cotton and perform better than synthetics in terms of comfort.

When it comes to rash guards and swim shirts, it’s important to look for options that offer UPF protection through tight weaving rather than chemical treatments.
